It is amazing news. Nepalese economy is not doing so well but its banking sector is growing at the moment. There are a number of banks operating in Nepal now and they are contributing in the economy. In fact, the growth in the banking sector is always a positive thing for the economy of any country. In Nepal, many people still do not have any bank account. So, I guess that the banks will try to attract new clients and this way more people will get banking facilities in a short time in this country.

For a layman, it wouldn’t be surprising if he feels that banking sector is at the saturation point in terms of the number of players. At every nook and cranny of the city (particularly in the capital) one can find dozens of banks represented either by a branch, extension counter or ATM. Added to the crowd only during the October are three more commercial banks, namely Bank of Asia, Sunrise Bank and Prime Bank while People’s Bank is preparing to start in the near future. One may ponder what made them get into this already saturated sector and what new services and facilities are they planning to bring into the market.

I am happy about it but I would love to see some banks go to the rural areas and try to provide banking facilities to the rural people in Nepal. In fact, in South Asia, rural people have hardly any access to banking facilities.
