To every Hindu, Sri Lanka is a familiar name because of the religious epic Ramayana. You know that most people of India’s 1 billion population are Hindus and that is why Sri Lanka can be a very attractive tourist destination for the Hindus. Sri Lanka is mainly a Buddhist country and Sri Lanka has some attractive places for the Buddhists too. So, Sri Lankan government wants to attract more tourists from India.

Sri Lanka's Tourism Promotion Bureau says Sri Lanka has 34 sites related to the ancient epic of 'Ramayana'.

"In India sometimes elections are won on the Ramayana platform and it is a huge thing," Renton De Alwis chairman of tourism promotion bureau told reporters.

"We will be getting the Indian government to assist us in developing some of these products [sites]."

According to legend, Prince Rama's wife Seetha, was captured by King Rawana of Sri Lanka who had flying machines known as a Dandu-Monera or a 'large peacock'.

More than 100,000 Indian tourists visited Sri Lanka in 2005. If Indian investors come forward and develop the tourist sites related to epic Ramayana in Sri Lanka then this number can increase significantly. Of course, Sri Lankan government has to work harder to improve on the political stability in the country.
