I just read a depressing report about Maldives in MinivanNews. According to this report, drug abuse is increasing in the Maldives and the worst part is that drug is becoming a flourishing business for some people. The number of drug related cases is also increasing sharply and drug abuse is spreading among young people in an alarming rate.

MinivanNews reported:

And while official estimates suggest around 10% of Malé’s youth are using drugs, on-the-ground accounts from young people suggest this figure may be as high as 50 to 70 per cent.

A report by the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) released this month warns: “Of those who abuse drugs in Maldives, 20-25 per cent inject them. Injecting drug abuse rose from 8 per cent in 2003 to 29 per cent in 2006 and three-quarters of imprisoned drug offenders are drug abusers.”

The government of Maldives has to come forward and act against drug problem decisively. The condition is not rosy at all in the country when it comes to drug addiction. It is high time to act before it is really too late.
