Submarine cable SEA-ME-WE-4 will be upgraded by 2009 : More high speed internet for South Asia
The capacity of submarine cable that runs through India will be increased by 2009. The submarine cable, South East Asia –Middle East – Western Europe – 4 (SEA-ME-WE-4) connects fourteen countries: Italy, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and France.

The upgrading of the cable will increase the power of internet in these countries. Business Standard reports:

The doubling of the cable system would result in increasing the trunk capacity of the cable and helping it support increasing broadband traffic along the route.

The cable system, owned by a consortium of 16 telecom carriers, has awarded the upgradation contract to global infrastructure major Alcatel-Lucent and Japanese company Fujitsu.

According to industry sources, Alcatel-Lucent has been awarded the turnkey contract for upgrading certain segments, linking between Mumbai and Marseilles in France.

The company will deploy additional dense wavelength division multiplexing equipment (DWDM) - a data transmission technology - on the India-France link and upgrade a terrestrial link connecting Alexandria and Suez.

Submarine cable

Japan’s Fujitsu company will upgrade the cable from Mumbai to Singapore. SEA-ME-WE-4 covers 20,000 km, connecting 14 countries. It has 16 landing stations. In India, Bharti Airtel and Tata Communications are the consortium partners of the submarine cable.

This is also great news for Bangladesh as well. This means high speed internet for Bangladeshi people. It is coming in such a time when the popularity of internet is growing day by day in our country. Now, more people will be able to use the internet in our country. I hope and pray that the Alcatel- Lucent and Fujitsu finish the project as soon as possible.
