Mobile phone came into Bangladesh in the early parts of 1990’s. However, at first, one company had total monopoly over the sector and hardly anything changed until 1997. Three more companies were given the permission to carry out business in the mobile phone sector in Bangladesh after 1996 and right now, there are six mobile phone operators in this market.
Now, it seems that three more companies are interested in the telecom sector of Bangladesh. They are Orange Telecom, SK Telecom and Etisalat. All these companies are very famous in the international telecom sector. They are interested about investing in Wi-Max, Internet, private submarine cable etc. Representatives of these 3 companies are going to talk to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). BTRC has taken a number of initiatives in the last 1 year for the development of Telecom sector.
Now, in Bangladesh, the price of a new mobile phone connection and mobile phone call rate is perhaps one of the lowest in the world. So, if these three new companies come to invest in telecom sector then the condition of internet will really improve. So, I think that it is another revolutionary phase for the telecom sector in Bangladesh and this time mainly the internet users in Bangladesh will get the main benefit. I will be happy if they get fast and reliable broadband Internet access at an affordable price.
