King Gyanendra will not leave Nepal.
Few days ago, news came out that Nepal’s former King, Gyanendra will leave Nepal and live in India in fear of his life from the Maoists. The latest statement from the King’s press refuted the claim. Gyanendra will not leave Nepal. On the contrary, the Maoists expect the king to leave office peacefully.

They do not want to use coercive power. The first concern of the Maoists after going to power is to abolish the year old monarchy and declare Nepal as a republic. BBC reports:

The Maoists have made it clear that they will make the abolition of the monarchy one of the first priorities of the new constituent assembly.

"It does not matter whether he lives in India or Nepal," Maoist spokesman Krishna Bahadur Mahara told AFP news agency on Monday.

"We have already decided with the interim constitution what will be done. We are going to declare Nepal a republic, and he will have to accept it."

King Gyanendra

Last week, Maoist leader Prachanda requested Gyanendra to step down on his own accord. He said that throughout the history monarchs were either beheaded or sent to exile and he does not want to see the repetition of history in Nepal.

The victory of communist party in the latest election came as a big surprise. The communist party is dead against monarchy and they want to establish republic. At such a critical stage, it will be an intelligent move on the part of former king Gyanendra to step down peacefully or else, the political situation of Nepal will become unstable again.
