Famous Japanese electronics company, Hitachi, is planning to build a new factory in Sri Lanka that will produce industrial air conditions. Hitachi will invest $2 million to build the factory. ACMA Private Limited, the Asian distributor of Hitachi, held talks with the Sri Lankan industry ministry and reserved a 10 acres plot in Bangadeniya industrial zone.
This will be the first large scale industry established in this particular industrial zone and Managing Director ACMA Say Kin Heng was confident that the government would come through on its promises to construct efficient infrastructure to support it. In spite of the relatively unknown sphere ACMA are also optimistic of their chances to train local people and hope to kick off proceedings with 100 initial employees.
They also expect to encourage Sri Lankans working in countries such as China, Japan, Singapore and Thailand to return and infuse their precious trained labour rather than work abroad.
'This is something that we are doing to improve the standard of living for people in this country. I have been in and out of Sri Lanka for decades and I have always noticed that the quality of food available to the people is poor because there is no proper refrigeration processess for preservation. We hope to raise the economic opportunities and livelihood of people through this plan,” he said.
If everything goes well, the Hitachi will export their products and expand the facility. It will invest $4 million for expansion but ACMA did not disclose any information on future expansion.
It looks like Japan’s love for Sri Lanka is not over yet. Earlier, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, Japan’s largest telecom company bought shares of Sri Lankan Telecom which they sold to Global Telecommunications Holdings, a Netherlands based company.
This is definitely good news for Sri Lanka. The opening of a new industry means work for people. In addition, Sri Lankan people will now be able to buy Hitachi products at lower price.
