You know that there are basically two main food items in the world- wheat and rice. Millions of people eat rice everyday, while millions of other people are fan of wheat. In Sri Lanka, people traditionally like to eat rice but in the past few decades they became addicted to wheat. In fact, at first wheat was given by rich countries to Sri Lanka at free of charge and after the people of Sri Lanka liked wheat then they gave wheat on loan.
This way, many Sri Lankan people became fan of wheat. This caused some problem for the Sri Lankan economy. Sri Lankan farmers mainly produce rice and that is why, the price of rice is not that expensive. On the other hand, Sri Lanka has to import wheat. That why, it has to spend more money for importing wheat. Now, the good thing is that many people in Sri Lanka have decreased the amount of wheat consumption and have again gone back to eating rice. This has created a positive impact for the Sri Lankan economy.
The Sri Lankan story should encourage some other neighboring countries in the region. Changing food habit is very difficult, but it is not impossible and this is something Sri Lankan people have proved.
