Meet Tashi Group and Singye Group- the top business conglomerates of Bhutan
Though Bhutan is obsessed with Gross National Happiness, there is money in the valley of happiness and some serious money makers as usual. Meet Tashi Group and Singye Group, two largest business conglomerates of Bhutan. The interesting thing is, when Kuensel, Bhutan’s national newspaper, tried to get information about the largest business organizations in the country, the government did not provide them any information.

They thought it was “inappropriate.” Kuensel Online reports:

With 26 companies and growing, the Tashi Group is still the largest private entity in Bhutan.

The company under Dasho Ugyen Dorjee had a business monopoly in Bhutan for close to four decades, building a business empire that included retail, wholesale, manufacturing, telecom, tourism, hotels, chemicals, petroleum, fruit processing and essential oils. “Yes, we were a monopoly because we were pioneers in the field and there was no one else around, but now we’re happy to see that other companies are coming up and doing well too,” said Tobgyal Wangchuk, CEO of the Tashi Group.

The latest ventures of the group include building of two ferro alloy factories in Pasakha, the near completed Taj-Tashi luxury hotel in Thimphu and Tashi cell, for which it bid Nu 777 million for a license.

Tashi Group started in 1959 with Nu 2000. Tobgyal Wangchuk Dorji’s father owned a grocery shop that soon turned into a big retail and wholesaling giant. Till now, Tashi Group has been occupying the top spot in the business sector of Bhutan.

Like the Tashi Group, Singye Group also had a humble beginning in the 1960’s. Father of current owner, Ugyen Tsechup, Yab Ugyen Dorjee, had a shop. Later, he took up timber business. Singye group may have entered late into business but it saw rapid expansion in the last few decades. After some time, the company got divided into two different business organizations- Singye Group, run by son, Ugyen Tsechup and Dumchen Agencies, run by Yab Ugyen Dorji. Singye is not the second largest business conglomerate but it has a diversified business. There are Singye construction, Singye stone and sand factory, Singye hollow block unit, Singye batching plant, Singye wood industry, Omzim manufacturing (yarn, polyester), Singye readymade garments, Zimdra maruti (Zimdra workshop, Zimdra impex (wholesale), Zimdra spareparts, Mahindra and Mahindra outlet).
