In order to eradicate Polio from Pakistan, government has taken the largest initiative of polio vaccination in the country’s history. Pakistan, especially the North West Frontier province is very much prone to polio. The “National Polio eradication campaign” is going to start from Tuesday.
The vaccination will target 34 million children under the age of five years. Even the children who are travelling will be given polio vaccine. The News reports:
Preparations are currently in full swing for the campaign. 'The News' has learnt that over 75,000 teams are being constituted to trek the length and breadth of the country. Teams consisting of over 170,000 vaccinators will administer oral polio vaccine to all eligible children. Similarly, teams have also been constituted to perform duties at the toll plazas.
Pakistan is in the final push stage of the fight against polio, and the global community has tipped Pakistan as the world's next polio-free nation. The country has had the lowest number of polio cases as against India, which reported more than 800 cases last year, and Afghanistan and Nigeria, which continue to report thousands of cases.
To vaccinate the travelling children, 54 toll plazas have been established all over the country.
Because of serious vaccination, Polio has become a minor threat in Pakistan. Only few years ago, thousands of Pakistani children suffered from Polio. If things go as planned this year, Pakistan will become the next Polio free nation in the world. In 2007, 33 children suffered from Polio. This year till now, 8 cases have been reported. It is a great achievement on the part of Pakistani government. I congratulate them on the success. I wish and pray that no Pakistani child suffer from polio after this campaign.
