In the world, there are more than 2 billion mobile phone subscribers. So, the figure 275,000 is indeed like a drop in the ocean. However, for Maldives and Dhiraagu, this is an amazing achievement because the total population of the country is a bit more than 300,000. This means that almost everyone in Maldives now has a mobile phone connection.
I found a press release about it in the official website of Dhiraagu and I am giving a part of the press release here:
Dhiraagu, the leading telecoms company in Maldives today announced the connection of 275,000th mobile customer to its state of the art mobile network. The company also announced the completion of mobile coverage to all inhabited islands, a key milestone in the telecom history of Maldives.
At the press conference held today at Nasandhura Palace Hotel, the announcement was made by Dhiraagu Chief Executive Mr. Ismail Rasheed. Speaking at the function, Ismail congratulated the 275,000th customer Mr. Mohamed Linaaf and presented him with a plaque and Nokia N series mobile phone with one year free subscription to Dhiraagu Post-Paid Platinum Package. Ismail also thanked customers for their trust in Dhiraagu and reiterated company’s commitment in providing high quality services and introducing new innovations.
Dhiraagu CE also highlighted Dhiraagu’s role in the socio-economic development of the country and in particular the development of tourism industry. “Dhiraagu is the only service provider offering mobile coverage to all tourists resorts in the country. This shows our commitment to the development of key industries.” Ismail said at the press conference.
Maldives has now the highest penetration rate in mobile phone sector in South Asia. It is good news for the people of Maldives. Well, for many years, Dhiraagu had total monopoly in Maldives and this did not help the consumers. Good thing is that now Dhiraagu bosses have changed their style and are offering good services at a much lower rate than before.

Maldive is a small country with almost 3,00,000 people but their quantity of using mobile phone is really incredible and unbelievable. However, i hope this amouont will increase and people of Maldive will get benifit to contact with other people in a cheap rate.
