Maldives: News Updates for 8 May 2008

President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has been in power since 1978. I wonder if there is any other president in Asia who is in power for such a long time. Until 2005, he ruled the country with a strong hand but he had to give in and allow the formation of other political parties. Now, an election is expected to take place in this August. Well, the opposition parties are not happy with election preparations.

Yes, it is good news for Nepal that World Bank is going to provide some financial support to this mountainous country. In fact, Nepal went under monarchy for a long time and the country found international aid and financial support very hard to come by for years. Now, Nepal has an elected government and I hope that international institutions like World Bank, ADB, World Bank will continue giving monetary support to the country for the development activities and the multi national companies will also come to invest in the country.

I agree with you on the fact that China and India should provide their help to their neighboring county, Nepal. US leaders also should extend their helping hand considering the wellbeing of the general people of Nepal.

Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is a man of dispute. He is such a honorable and respectable leader that anyone can follow him to set their country in a good position. I hope Maldive people will find any new leader like Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. I am also happy to see that some international bank has launched their branch in Maldive. I hope Maldive should reach in the list of developed country.
