Miss Bhutan 2008: Bhutan's first beauty pageant

As I was scanning ‘Kuensel Online,’ the Bhutanese National Newspaper, I came across this ad, ‘Miss Bhutan 2008.’  I was very much surprised (shocked!! will be better) to see it. Bhutan is a country that strictly holds on to its years old cultures and traditions. It does not allow its people to wear western dresses. Television came to Bhutan in 1999 and only few years ago, the country saw mobile phone. It has only few thousand computers. Bhutan’s king is concerned about maintaining the country’s Gross National Happiness. In such a country, people are now going to see beauty pageant. It is quite a surprise for me.

Miss Bhutan 2008 will be the first beauty pageant in Bhutan’s history. Registration for the pageant started from April 17. So far, 40 girls aged 17-28 sent their applications. Out of all the applicants, 20 girls will be chosen. Bhutan Times reports:

Miss Bhutan squad will then shortlist the candidates in each zone and come up with 20 finalists. The finalists will undergo intensive training and grooming under the guidance of professionals from abroad.

During their training period the contestants will have audience with Their Majesties, Prime Minister, and senior bureaucrats to enrich their local knowledge.

Costume designers will be brought in from abroad and the Jury for the grand finale will comprise Miss Thailand, Miss Bangladesh and a model from the USA. “We are inviting the jury from outside to avoid favoritism,” said Dechen Wangmo.

The format of the beauty pageant will be of international standards except for the bikini round. And prior to the grand finale a preliminary round will be conducted by a Bhutanese jury.

There will be seven titles: Miss Photogenic, Miss Talented, Miss Beautiful Smile, Miss Congeniality, Miss GNH, Miss Personality, and Best Model. Officials from the Gross National Happiness Commission and Center for Bhutan Studies will assess and declare Miss GNH. The winner will receive a cash prize of Nu 100,000. The crown designed in India will be worth Nu 100,000.

Bhutan is a poor country but it has rich tradition. Now, the recent news that has found in the national newspaper of Bhutan ‘Kuensel Online,’ titled ‘Miss Bhutan 2008.’ make me surprised. Bhutan has strong traditional culture. And few days ago they saw television and mobile phone. However, in my point of view Bhutan is developing and their people are getting facities to use new technology. I hope Beauty pageant will help to change the rules largely. I am eagerly waiting to see what will happend next.
