Miss Bhutan 2008 will be the first beauty pageant in Bhutan’s history. Registration for the pageant started from April 17. So far, 40 girls aged 17-28 sent their applications. Out of all the applicants, 20 girls will be chosen. Bhutan Times reports:

During their training period the contestants will have audience with Their Majesties, Prime Minister, and senior bureaucrats to enrich their local knowledge.
Costume designers will be brought in from abroad and the Jury for the grand finale will comprise Miss
The format of the beauty pageant will be of international standards except for the bikini round. And prior to the grand finale a preliminary round will be conducted by a Bhutanese jury.
There will be seven titles: Miss Photogenic, Miss Talented, Miss Beautiful Smile, Miss Congeniality, Miss GNH, Miss Personality, and Best Model. Officials from the Gross National Happiness Commission and Center for Bhutan Studies will assess and declare Miss GNH. The winner will receive a cash prize of Nu 100,000. The crown designed in

Bhutan is a poor country but it has rich tradition. Now, the recent news that has found in the national newspaper of Bhutan ‘Kuensel Online,’ titled ‘Miss Bhutan 2008.’ make me surprised. Bhutan has strong traditional culture. And few days ago they saw television and mobile phone. However, in my point of view Bhutan is developing and their people are getting facities to use new technology. I hope Beauty pageant will help to change the rules largely.
