Bhutan will observe its first Constitution Day tomorrow
After hundred years of monarchy, Bhutan has now become a democratic country. Tomorrow is another major day for Bhutan. The draft constitution of Bhutan will be endorsed and passed tomorrow. To honor the day, June 2 has been declared as the ‘Constitution Day.’ The idea was proposed by the Prime Minister, Lyonchen Jigmi Y. Thinley. During the May 28th parliament session, the Prime Minister said that since the Draft Constitution was going to be endorsed and passed on June 2, it would be befitting to celebrate the day as the Constitution day. The day will be observed as a holiday.

Kuensel Online reports:

His Majesty the King said that he was touched by the desire of the nation’s highest legislative body to dedicate the Constitution to the fourth Druk Gyalpo, the Father of the Constitution. But the signing ceremony need not be hurried. The Constitution, which was adopted for the present generation and for posterity, would be signed only once in the country’s history. Therefore, the gatoen and tendryil must be well organized and all the people of Bhutan must share the spirit of occasion.

His Majesty advised that, since parliament will be in session for another month, it would be a better idea to hold the ceremony toward the end of the session, because it would leave enough time to organise such a special and historic event.

His Majesty also advised that the prime minister, the chief justice, and the speaker of the National Assembly discuss the issue and propose a suitable date - either June 2 or November 11 - as Constitution Day or Democracy Day in honour of the His Majesty the fourth Druk Gyalpo.

The Prime Minister who proposed the idea also said that Bhutan had stopped celebrating the coronation anniversary of the King. The Constitution Day would symbolize the dream of His Majesty, the fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck’s dream of turning Bhutan into a democratic country.

The 34 point draft constitution was published in 2005. In April 2007, the king put up bans on political parties and on March 24, Bhutan observed its first general election. The Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) or Bhutan United Party lead by Jigmi Thinley won the election and became the first Prime Minister of Bhutan. The first parliament session was called upon May 8, 2008.
