The general election of 2008 presented a hung parliament in Nepal with no party getting majority. The parliament members could agree on abolishing monarchy and making Nepal a republic but they could not agree on anything apart. So, intense political bargaining is now going on for the posts of President and Prime Minister.

The Nepali Congress has intensified lobbying in favour of Girija Prasad Koirala for the coveted post of the president.

As part of the lobbying, Home Minister and NC leader Krishna Prasad Situala met Maoist chairman Prachanda at the latter's residence in Nayabazaar Saturday morning and made a "formal request" to make Koirala the first president of Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.

Girija Prasad Koirala is a veteran politician and he is perhaps the most experienced politician in Nepal. He has been in the government for quite some time in the past. He is also a great survivor. The Maoists don’t want him to become the president as they want to fill this post with someone of their own.
