Development is confined to the western province of Sri Lanka

In a recent report published by the Federation of the Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) it is said that despite the country’s consistent economic growth for two decades, majority of the people are living in poverty because the confinement of economic growth in the Western province of Sri Lanka. The report titled ‘Achievement and Impact,’ was submitted to President Mahinda Rajapaksha at ‘Temple Trees.’

 

In the report, Nawaz Rajabdeen, President of the Federation of the Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka, said that in 2006, Sri Lanka observed an economic growth of 7.4% and 6.8% in 2007. Last year, the country’s the banking sector and large corporate firms increased their profits. However, rising oil price, defense expenditure and high cost of living hampered the growth in the previous year.

“The FCCISL believes that a sustainable peace in Sri Lanka will depend on equitable distribution of the benefits of economic growth. The Business for Peace Initiative (BPI) of FCCISL which completed two years of successful operations in May 2008 continue to act as a catalyst to contribute towards the peace building efforts of the country through an active and organised effort of the business community. They need to perform the role as ‘Ambassadors of Peace’ in this beautiful country,” FCCISL President said.

Under the Business for Peace Initiative (BPI), the FCCISL undertook various activities such as developing conflict resolution skills among business leaders, rehabilitating people of the conflict areas, improving the movement of cargo in the Northern part of Sri Lanka, teaching Sinhala/Tamil language to the business community, giving support to the Commissioner General of Essential Services (CGES) to ship essential goods to the North and so on.
