India was the hot favorite for the match because in the last match of Super Four, India defeated Sri Lanka convincingly just a few days earlier. Sri Lanka batted first and scored 273 runs in 49.5 overs. 273 is a good total in ODI cricket but in Asia Cup 2008, anything below 300 was considered to be a bad total.
Indian players looked happy at the interval. However, they had little idea of what would come next. Ajantha Mendis had something special in his bag for the day. He captured 6 wickets. Indian players could manage only 173- 100 runs short of Sri Lankan total. Sanath Jayasuriya scored a brilliant century for Sri Lanka. He is still going in the age of 39. He got 125 runs. This is the fourth Asia Cup title for Sri Lanka.
