Yesterday, Rupert Murdoch, owner of STAR Group Ltd., announced to invest $100 million to open six new regional television channels in India. Currently, STAR TV has 17 channels in India. In a press conference held in Mumbai, the 77 year old
‘Media- Moghul’ said that the expansion project will start from next year. Mr. Murdoch arrived in India on July 30th and met with Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh and Congress Party leader, Sonia Gandhi.
STAR India’s Vice President, Vasudha Jha said that they were planning this expansion of regional channels for quite sometime as they were gaining lots of viewership and critical mass.
Headquartered in Hong Kong, STAR Group Ltd., is currently the largest media and entertainment company in Asia. Owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, STAR broadcasts over 60 services in ten different languages in 53 Asian countries. It is watched by 100 million viewers every day.
