Tsunami devastated much of Asia in December 2004. Maldives was badly hit too. The tourism infrastructure of the got destroyed and last year not too many tourists came to visit the country. However, it seems that Maldives has witnessed a dramatic turn around and the year 2006 is going to be a prosperous one in terms of tourism for Maldives. This year, Maldives is expecting to have nearly 600,000 tourists. It is notable that the population of the country is just 300,000. So, the number of tourists will be double than the number of people in Maldives.
It is good for the people of Maldives as the economy of the country depends a lot on tourism earning. Life goes on even after the Tsunami. The only sad part is that international aid has not come to the country that much. Maldives need nearly $400 million for reconstruction and rehabilitation projects but so far received only less than $40 million. Still the country is doing well to recover from Tsunami.
