Some Indian cities may be the most attractive outsourcing destinations in the world but the majority of the Indian population lives in the rural areas. People living in thousands of villages in India are often deprived of the basic necessities of life- computer and Internet are something they even do not see in their dream. Chip giant Intel Corp. has come forward with the “Jagruti” (awakening) initiative to make this dream a reality. Today Intel Corp. has announced the initiative to take computer and internet facilities to the rural India. In the media, this computer has been called as ' Ruggedised Personal Computer' because the PC can tolerate extreme heat, dust and humidity of rural India. The PC can even run with alternative sources of power- an answer to everyday power failures in rural India
The PCs will be used for e-mail, online bill payment, processing and submission of Government documents, internet browsing etc. Intel is hoping that these PCs would be purchased and installed in kiosks run by local entrepreneurs and this would revolutionize use of computer and Internet in rural India
Intel Corp. has again demonstrated its leadership to the world by combining business with social welfare. If the initiative becomes successful, it will bring both fame and fortune for Intel Corp. from a very large market.
