When I saw the post in the website of SMS Text News, I first thought that it was an April fool hoax. Then I went to the website of The Times of India to check the matter. The idea is very simple but smart- mobile phone companies will display ads of sponsors in SMS and this way, it will be the sponsor who will pay for the SMS not the subscriber. This idea is similar to free email. For example, when I use free email service of Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail, I do not pay anything because those companies earn their revenue through advertisements displayed with the mails.
There are now approximately 75 million mobile phone subscribers in India and this number is increasing very rapidly in a country of 1 billion people. It is a win-win situation for everyone. The mobile phone operators do not lose any revenue and instead will earn more. The subscriber can use the service at free of cost and finally for the sponsors it is like direct marketing. SMS, MMS and even outgoing call may get sponsored in near future.
What do you think about it?
