Possible Impact of bird flu in Pakistani Economy
Bird flu is still in a limited scale in Pakistan but there is no guarantee that it will not turn deadly in near future. Bird flu has already attacked Pakistan's neighbors including India and Afghanistan. Many people in Pakistan are related to the poultry industry and according to a report published last year in Dawn (Pakistan's influential English daily), "in 2004, egg production increased to 8,247 million and poultry meat to 4,02,000 tons." Poultry products are an important source of protein for the common people in the country and any outbreak of large scale bird flu will surely put severe pressure in the price of other types of meat (beef and mutton) and fish. This will also bring devastation to thousands of people working in poultry farms.

Today, Pakistan reported second outbreak of deadly H5N1 bird flu strain in a poultry farm near Islamabad. Until now, there has been no case of human infection of bird flu in Pakistan. Right now the export activities of poultry related products of Pakistan is insignificant and from visiting many websites about the poultry industry of Pakistan, I touched that the poultry owners have to go some way to meet the international standard.

My view is that the Pakistani government should tackle this problem very seriously and come out with a special scheme to support the poultry farmers who will lose their stock because of bird flu.

Unfortunately, until now the governments of the world have not come forward to act decisively against the threats of bird flu.
