![]() These days, the ongoing civil war is getting all the media coverage and thus economic issues have perhaps taken back seat for us. However, Sri Lankan government is trying very hard to promote the telecommunication sector and now Telecommunications Regulatory Commission is giving mobile phone operators to provide third generation mobile phone services in Sri Lanka. The operators will have to pay a fixed license fee of $5 million if they want to set up 3rd generation mobile phone network. After 3G is implemented in Sri Lanka then the users will have access to high speed of Internet service and this is something Sri Lankan users need a lot. High speed wireless services will also be ensured with this move.
Dialog Telekom, Mobitel Lanka, Celltel Lanka and Hutchison are the mobile phone operators and Dialog Telekom (a subsidiary of the Telekom Malaysia Group) has 60% market share of 3.5 million subscribers.
I am simply happy that Sri Lankan ICT sector is moving forward amidst so much violence and instability.
What is your idea?

Hello, got here through hedgehogman's blog. Upon reading this post, I'm getting the idea that Philippines and Sri Lanka suffer the same political problems. Civil unrest always tend to clutter the news causing setbacks in our economy. You said Sri Lanka is into 3G mobile phones, the same here but I guess only the well to do can afford the soaring prices of this technology.
