Bangladesh and World Cup Football: Flags and TV sets (I)
Bangladesh could never qualify for World Cup Football and not even for Asian Cup Football. Its ranking in world football has been consistently terrible. Only 10 years, ago football was the most popular game in Bangladesh but due to the consistent bad performance of the national football team and getting test status in world cricket, football has lost its massive popularity in Bangladesh. However, World Cup Football is still the most popular sporting event to the people of the country. Already, the students of the leading technology university, BUET, have successfully been able postpone their exams for one month to enjoy world cup. Now, people are very busy in buying television sets and flags. Thus, television companies and traders and the tailor shops are enjoying their best business of all time.

I found in a report of a Bangla daily that for World Cup nearly 50-60 thousand television sets are being sold and TV companies are now finding it difficult to supply so many TV sets in such a short time. As a result of the falling price in color TV sets, this time, most people are going for color sets.  Because of frequent power failures, people are worried whether they can enjoy all the games. That is why; many people are buying generators or some sort of alternatives.

My parents are from Pakistan, and even there they dont understand the hype, its becuase cricket plays such a huge part!

Come on England!

Yes, football is a part of the life of people in Bangladesh. All the world cup matches have been helding at a very late hour of night except the 2002 Japan/Korea world cup but fans are very enthusiatic and they do not feel any problem with this time difference rather they enjoy it more.
Thank you for your informative article.
