General Motors sales rode 39% faster in May 2006
General Motors (GM) is not in the best condition in USA in terms of sales these days. It is losing market to Asian brands like Toyota and Honda. However, in India, GM is perhaps in the road to becoming a serious contender in the auto industry. Now, GM bosses in India will have something to cheer about as last month (May 2006) GM has perhaps increased its sale of vehicles by 39% compared to May 2005. In May 2005, GM sold 2,503 cars in India while this time the figure is 3,478. This is very impressive and a few days ago, I wrote that GM was launching `Chevrolet Spark' in India next year.

GM is now serious about the Indian market and has a target of capturing 10% of Indian car market by 2010. It is expected that in 2010, the size of Indian car market will become more than 2 million. However, getting that market share will not be very easy as most Indians prefer small and inexpensive cars. GM must address this issue seriously if it really wants to become a notable player in India.

Don’t you think so?

India is a country of 100 million and it has showed a consistent economic growth in the last few financial years. So, it is very usual that Indian market will get extra focus to the foreign companies. Here, GM is doing the same. They have a very good plan amiming to take the 10% car market of India by 2010. You are right that if they want to make a boom in their car selling then they have to be concerned about the price sensitive market of India.
