There are very few countries in the world like Maldives, whose economy is so much focused on tourism. Tourism brings most foreign exchange for the country and also provides 20% of GDP of Maldives. Maldives has more than 85 tourist spots and a few days ago, in a road show in UAE, Maldives government announced the inclusion of 35 new islands as tourists spots. The main goal is to attract more tourists from GCC countries. Officials of 95 travel companies in the Middle East joined the road show.
It is nice to see that tourism sector of Maldives is successfully back on the right track after suffering the devastation of Tsunami in December 2004. In 2005, the tourism industry suffered too much and this year there is sign of strong growth. Maldives has so far failed to attract tourist from Middle East in large number although the country is so near to the Middle East. Maldives officials are hoping that by organizing several road shows in the Middle East, they will get more visitors from the region.

Maybe every developing nation should promote tourism in their backyard. If not hampered too much by terrorism, I think it would be one of the most profitable industry to date.
