Pakistan's IT sector is growing impressively these days. The growth is coming from both in increasing export earning as well as growing demand from the local market. Right now, Pakistan has 50,000 workers in the IT sector and Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) officials feel that by 2010, Pakistan will need 232,000 trained IT professionals. PSEB has also predicted that by 2010, Pakistan has the potential to earn $9 billion of revenue from IT sector. It may seem to be very good news for Pakistan but the main problem is that Pakistan does not have a large pool of skilled IT graduates like India. It is also very difficult to produce skilled IT professionals overnight.
The good thing is that Pakistani government has taken this matter very seriously and in one of my earlier posts I mentioned the initiative taken by Pakistani government under which top 100 or 200 students from each university will work in IT companies. PSEB officials are now trying to make a bridge between the industry and the academia in this regard. I am very happy to see that after India, Pakistan is gradually emerging as a serious contender in the world IT scenario. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and even Nepal have good potential too.
