Electricity price is always a bone of contention in every South Asian country. Since, it touches the life of millions of people the government of a country is always reluctant to increase its price. Whenever the price of electricity is increased, the opposition parties start demonstration against it and often they get good support from the common mass. So, I have full sympathy for Sri Lankan government as it has decided to raise the electricity price from this August. The good thing is that the price will not increased for the poor people who use the least amount of electricity.
The government has no other choice but to take this unpopular decision because Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), a government organization, is suffering huge losses for selling electricity at a much cheaper price than production cost. As a result, the board is facing huge financial crisis. CEB is suffering $45,000 of daily loss because of this matter.
Well, this scenario is common in every South Asian country. The government acts when it is late and thus it becomes a huge burden both for the government and the common people. The common people suffer because all of a sudden they see an abnormal price hike.
