I got surprised to see that World Cup Football can be so popular in Bhutan. My surprise came from the fact that Bhutan has perhaps the weakest national football team in South Asia and in the western media Bhutan is almost all the time portrayed as a country where time has stool still. In the official website of Bhutanese government, I could not find anything related to World Cup Football 2006 but then in Bhutan Weblog, I found a post titled, 'World Cup Fever!'. I like to quote from this post:
I asked a friend if he would like to join for an excursion this weekend. His reply- "Oh no, no official tour, no hang-outs, no outings, no meetings...till World Cup is over!" He exclaims having called his friends to his place for the whole month. (Some nerves!)
Every where I go, I hear World Cup this, World Cup that! Mmm, could I help myself sometimes to share the excitement? My room-mate here is already updated with the list of timing, participants and so on. I look at it...honest, I don't seem to figure out anything!"
Finally, in kuenselonline.com, I found this photo news, "Many bars in the capital have set up projectors to watch the World Cup. Germany won the World Cup's first inaugural match, 4-2."
So, you can reach into your own conclusion. The next time you see any news item in the western media portraying Bhutan as a non-modern country then at least you can say yourself one thing- 'Many people in Bhutan love World Cup Football'
