The economic activities in Maldives are mainly centered on tourism and fishing. Since, Maldives is a country with more than 1,000 islands; Male sea port plays a crucial in the economy of the country. Maldives Ports Authority (MPA) looks after the port and now it has announced that it will not hire any new foreign labors to work in the port. I found a report published in Haama Daily with the title, 'MPA to hire local labor'. Right now, 119 labors out of 381 are expatriates and MPA will not renew the contract of foreign labors. Since the salary is good ($311 per month), many Moldavians are eager to work in the port and they are dissatisfied with MPA for recruiting foreign labors.
There is nothing wrong in the decision taken by MPA to recruit local labors only as Maldives is not exactly a rich country. However, the only concern is that whether local labors are as skilled as the foreign labors. Some of the foreign workers have been engaged into their jobs for more than ten years and are highly experienced and skilled. Operating a port needs highly skilled workers.
