Bhutanese government is too eager to portray Bhutan as a happy country and the government gives more emphasis on increasing Gross National Happiness than Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Bhutanese government is very keen to preserve its cultural heritage and natural beauty. So, modern technology entered in the country very late compared to the rest of the world. Only in the last 7 years, television, internet and mobile phones were allowed in Bhutan. So, there is little wonder that Bhutan does not have private FM radio stations yet. Good thing is that Bhutan government is going to give licenses for two FM radio stations. The name of the two stations will be Radio Valley and YFM.
The people living in or around the capital Thimpu will only be able to enjoy the programs. This is another example's of Bhutan's march towards modernization and embracing modern technology. I guess some people in the country who are champions of traditional ideas will feel disappointed as FM radio stations will most probably broadcast mainly entertaining programs for the young generation. So, some people belonging to the traditionalist camp may feel that the happiness of Bhutan is going to be at stake.
