Dial-up 512 KBPS: The next big thing for Internet in 2007!
I know that by looking at the title, you will only laugh at it as it is old news. I don’t blame you for laughing at me. 512 KBPS is not a speed at all in the developing countries. However, for Bhutan it is big news, big news as Bhutanese Internet users will be able to get 512 KBPS of Internet speed by January 2007. Let us know a bit more from a report of Kuenselonline.com.
"In the pilot phase of the project, which is worth Nu. 16.5 million and is to be ready in six months, the service would be provided in the core urban areas of Thimphu, Paro, Phuentsholing, Wangduephodrang, Trongsa and Kanglung.
“The locations were not chosen randomly,” said the general manager of Druknet, Ganga R Sharma. “Thimphu, Phuentsholing, Paro and Wangdue have fibre optic connectivity which would make broadband possible,” he said. “Trongsa and Kanglung are connected via SDH radio and has adequate capacity to provide back haul connections.”
Ganga Sharma explained that dial up connectivity via Druknet, Bhutan Telecom’s internet service provider, was between 14.4 kbps to 52.2 kbps at the moment. This would increase to 512 kbps or higher once the system was laid out."
Now, can you imagine how big news it is going to be for the Internet users in Bhutan! Bhutan has only a few thousand Internet users and many of them will not be able to afford this. I guess that it will become popular to the small offices who cannot afford a leased line.
I am happy for the Bhutanese Internet users as they are going to have high speed Internet. I wish that every one in South Asia has 512 KBPS internet within the next 2 years. Why not in the next 6 months? If you ask it then I would reply 2 years is perhaps too soon!
