The heavy monsoon rain has caused flood in the Eastern and Southern provinces of India. Mumbai, Chattishgarh, Andhrapradesh, Gujarat, Hyderabad, Maharashtra, Orissa, and many other areas in the eastern and western zone are severely damaged by this flood.
In Andhrapradesh, within the last three days, eighty people have died so far. Officials said that drowning, landslide, and electrocution were the major causes of death. According to the news published in the Washington Post , yesterday, a jeep was washed away in Araku village located about 540 kilometers northeast of Hyderabad. In an interview with Reuters, Southern India’s Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Lakshmaiah said that more than five hundred thousand people living in low-lying areas were displaced due to the flood. The airport at Vishakhapatnam has been shut down for three days as the runways went under water.
In Orissa, five days of heavy rain and flood has killed thirty six people.
Flood and rain is a major problem not only in India but also in other South Asian countries, such as Bangladesh, Pakistan. Most of the countries of this region are more or less agro-based. Rain is very important for growing crops. However, too much rain causes flood. The worst part is that the governments of these countries do not have any emergency plan under which people and resources can be moved to a safer place. I hope and pray that leaders of the South Asian countries think of devising some kind emergency plan that would save the lives of the poor people and would help them to return to their normal lives after flood.
