
Agartala is the capital of Tripura State. Lying on the banks of Haora River, the city is surrounded by Bangladesh from north, west and south. The state of Mizoram is situated on the east and the state of Assam on the North east.
Agartala was established as the capital of Tripura in 1838 by Maharaja Krishna Kishore Manikya. In 1871, the Agaratala Municipality was established and its first chairman was Mr. A.W.B. Power.
At present, Agartala is one of the busy cities of north east India. According to the census of 2001, the population of this city is 189,327. An interesting feature about its population is that male and females are equal in number fifty fifty. This city has a very high literary rate; 85%. Out of the total educated population 52% are males and 48% are females.
Agartala is not a very heavily industrialized city. Hence, it is rich in flora and fauna.
Agartala has many tourist sites. Some of the major tourist sites are:
Old Agartala: Situated on the east of the modern Agartala city is the previous capital of Tripura. It has a temple named “Fourteen Deities” (Chaturdas Devata). Every year during July “Karchi Puja” is held in this temple which brings lots of devotees.
Kamala Sagar: A large lake situated by the border of Bangladesh. A Kali temple is also situated near the lake which contains a twelfth century sand stone image of Durga, the female goddess.
Sepahijala: It is a wildlife sanctuary situated 30 km south of Agartala. A lake, zoo and a botanical garden can be found here.
Dumbur Reservoir: This reservoir occupies an area of 40 sq. k.m. The surrounding green landscape makes the whole area look very beautiful. Visitors can also enjoy boat ride at day or night.
There are several educational institutions in Agartala. Major educational institutions includes: Tripura University, MBB College, National Institute of Technology (NIT Agartala), Agartala Medical College, and Women's College.
Agartala is well connected by land and air. Agartala city can be reached by road from anywhere in India. The National Highway connects this city with Assam and other places of Tripura as well.
