![]() Bhutan is still way behind than the rest of the rest in terms of modernization. To increase the Gross National Happiness (GNH), Bhutanese government is not interested to allow modern instruments to be used in the country. Television, Internet and mobile phone came only in the last 7 years. The ordinary people depend on wood for their demand of fuel. Wood is also used for furniture and in the paper industry. So, there is a strong demand of wood in the country. Bhutanese government is now trying to promote the cultivation and use of bamboo as an alternative to wood. Bamboo can be used as a fuel, in making furniture and even in producing paper. This way, the pressure on wood will decrease.
Bhutan is an ideal country for growing bamboo and if the villagers become motivated then the pressure on wood will ease off. I wish that other countries in the region would take similar initiatives.

actually that is a great idea. Bamboo is suprisingly hardy and it grows very quickly.
