
Situated near Islamabad, Rawal Pindi is a very important city. The headquarters of Pakistan army and air force are situated here. Located in the province of Punjab, it is home to 1.4 million people. The city has a very rich historical background. Earlier, this area was occupied by a group of ascetics known as Rawals. Ruins of their village are found in Gajnipur.
Rawal Pindi served as the nation’s capital from 1959 to 1969. Compared to Islamabad, this city is not that modernized. The streets are small and populated. However, the weather is clean and healthy. The city has many tourist attractions: Ayub National Park, Rawalpindi Golf Course Rawalpindi Public Park and Cricket Stadium. Among historical sites, there are: Rawat Fort, Pharwala Fort, Rohtas Fort and Taxila, the site of an ancient city during the rule of Alexander. The city has a good number of universities and colleges. Reputed schools and colleges include: Gordon College, St Mary's Academy, Fauji Foundation, F.G. Sir Syed College, Bahria Foundation College F.G.Quaid-e-Azam College, Sir Syed Public School, Govt Muslim Higher Secondary School, Army Public School and College (APSAC) etc. Among Universities there are: Army Medical College, Fatima Jinnah Women's University, Arid Agriculture University, National University of Science and Technology, NUST Institute of Information Technology etc.
There are two major rivers in Rawal Pindi: Indus and Jhelum. Due to low precipitation, water is stored by building dams. There are two types of crops: Rabi and Kharif crops. Wheat, bajra, maize, potato, and vegetables are grown over here. Among fruits: groundnuts, pears, apples, citrus, apricots, walnuts are grown in Rawalpindi.
Various business organizations are situated in Rawal Pindi. Organizations selling defense instruments to the army can be found here. Among other major industries there are: flour mills, steel re-rolling, iron mills, beverages and fruit preservation, cigarettes, pharmaceutical, furniture, hosiery, glass products, marble processing, sewing machines, industrial gas processing, oil refining, etc.
The Islamabad international Airport is situated in Rawal Pindi. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the national airlines of Pakistan, operates here. In addition, a good number of International airlines also operate in this airport. By road, it is connected to all the major cities of Northern Pakistan. The city also has two six-lane express ways: M1 and M2.
