“The Data Theft Scandal”- this is the title of the documentary to be broadcast in Channel 4 (UK) tomorrow. It has already created a huge interest in UK and India. In Google news, I found so many reports that it took me quite a long time to go through all of them. If you do not know about this matter then this excerpt from IBN Live would be helpful:
“The Indian BPO industry is gearing up for Thursday morning blues. UK-based broadcaster Channel 4 has said it would air a sting operation on October 5 that would purportedly blow the lid off the thriving data theft scandal in India’s booming outsourcing industry.
The sting operation, titled The Data Theft Scandal, will reportedly show two Indian middlemen selling personal and confidential financial information of UK citizens they allegedly obtained from Indian call centers.”
This documentary was made after one year’s effort and it is surely going to affect the Indian call center industry. I am stating here the major accusations against the call center industry:
- Indian call center does not have high safety standards.
- The middlemen are operating to get sensitive information from call center employees.
- Some employees are ready to sell sensitive information for a small amount of money. Sometimes, the amount of money can be as small as £5 ($9.45).
- One middleman (in front of camera) offered to sell a database containing sensitive information of 200,000 people.
- British consumers should be worried about the safety of their sensitive information.
All these are serious accusations and it may damage the reputation of Indian call center industry and the outsourcing sector as a whole. In the next few days, many people are going to discuss about this problem. I hope that they can find a good solution to it.
data theft scandal will surely effect indian uprising call center industry, no doubt about that.
