After India and Sri Lanka, now its Maldives turn. Recently, doctors of Maldives have declared that they have found a new virus. Here is an excerpt of the report published in Haveeru.com :

 Doctors announced on Tuesday that there is currently a viral fever with new properties. Some of the doctors at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital said that the symptoms of the new virus included high fever, headaches, aches in joints and muscles, dizziness and nausea, weakness, and outbreak of pimples. Some doctors said that these were the symptoms of Chicken Gunya, spread through mosquitoes in neighbouring countries. “There is a viral fever with unusual symptoms,” said a senior doctor at IGMH, Dr. Ahmed Raazee. “However, we have as of yet been unable to diagnose what this particular viral fever is. We would need to conduct a serology test in order to find out what disease this is.”

The report says that till now there are 284 reported cases of infection. A representative from Public Health Department said that the virus is gradually spreading in other islands but the officials are saying that there is nothing to worry about.  

Honestly, I am shocked at the statement of the government officials. I think they do not get the news of their neighbouring country Sri Lanka. Five thousand people have been affected by the disease and Sri Lankan government is trying heart and soul to check the spread of Chikunguya. Maldives is not a very developed country. I do not know how the officials can remain calm in such a situation. They should start taking necessary measures to stop the spread of the disease before it becomes an epidemic.
