Nepal's people will be facing a load shedding of 9 hour from December. Because of the shortage of electricity, Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), has nothing but to impose this load shedding. The major reason behind this is the failure to finish the Marsyangdi project in Western Nepal. The 70 MW Marsyangdi project is one of the most important projects of Nepal. It started five years ago with German assistance but till now the work has not finished. The work is stopped because of the problems created by German contractors, local people and Maoist rebels. As a result, the government is losing a large amount of money every week.
Because of the failure of the Marsyangdi project, in January this year, NEA and Power Trading Corporation (PTC) of India signed an agreement under which, India would provide 50 Megawatt electricity. For transmission, India has to install a 132 KV transmission line but the Indian government did not start the maintenance work despite repeated requests from Nepal government. This is not the first time load shedding is happening. Last year, at this time the Nepalese people observed 17hour of load shedding per week last year.
No matter developed or underdeveloped electricity is very much necessary for every country in the world now. Without electricity, people suffer a lot. I am also very disappointed at the indifference of Indian government. India is bigger and more powerful than Nepal but this is definitely not a good thing to do. I hope that Indian government takes necessary steps to install the transmission line.
