
Puducherry is a union territory of India. Formerly a French colony, this union territory consists of four districts: Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahé. Puducherry is the Capital of this Union Territory.
The city is located on the coast of Bay of Bengal about 162 km south of Chennai. There are no hills or forests around the city.
Hindus are the majority in this area but there are Christians, Muslims and few Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists. Major languages include: Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, English and French.
Agriculture is the major industry in Puducherry. A large portion of the land is used for cultivation. Major agricultural products include rice, sugarcane, coconut, betel vines, millets, cottons, flowers etc. There is also a flourishing poultry industry. The city has co-operative milk supply society and dairy. Bahour and Oussoudu lakes are the major source of fish products. Major fishes include ribbon fish, sardine, silver belly, sharks, flying fish etc.
Major export products of Puducherry are groundnut, rice, fish, hides, skin, handicrafts, etc. There are also several factories in Puducherry. Major factories are: Swadeshi cotton mills Ltd, Sri Bharathi mills, Anglo-French textiles. Small scale industries mainly produce furniture, dry cells, cosmetics, steel utensils, cement products etc.
