For Bhutan, 2007 is going to be a very important year. The country is moving towards democracy and modernization. Bhutan is a poor country but its people are happier than many countries of the world.

What should be the New Year’s resolution for Bhutan?

I think that the most important resolution Bhutanese government and the people is that they should be determined to make a peaceful transition towards democracy. Almost all other countries of South Asia have suffered a lot of violence and instability while marching towards democracy. I hope that Bhutan does not suffer the same fate.

On the other hand, Bhutanese people and the government should be careful about the modernization process. Bhutanese economic system is still very backward and all of a sudden, the country is embracing and implementing modern economic system. There is nothing wrong with that. They just need to be careful about the negative aspects of modernization.
