Maldives: The Best Place for Tax in the World

Maldives often heads the media headlines for its political crisis and environmental concerns. Maldives is also famous for tourism. However, when it comes to doing business then we do not hear the name of Maldives that often. So, it is interesting for me to note that Maldives has been listed as the best place in terms of taxation. MinivanNews reported:

A study published last month by the World Bank and the accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP ranks the Maldives as the easiest country in which to pay taxes for businesses.

The study bases the claim on the average of the country rankings on total taxes, number of payments and time required to comply.

The Maldives is followed in the rankings by Ireland and then Oman, with many Latin American, African and Former Soviet countries coming last in the list of 175 states.

The study shows the Maldives requires only one tax payment, which takes zero hours to pay, and is only 9.3 percent of a business’s profit, as opposed to the Gambia, where it is 291 percent of profit.

It is good news for the economy of the country. We have seen healthy investment in the tourism sector in Maldives until now. Now, this ranking will catch the attention of the international business community. Hopefully, we will see more investment from foreign companies in the coming days.

I feel that the government of Maldives needs to promote this aspect of easy taxation to the outside world.
