Dabur India shuts down project in Nepal for security reasons

Many multi national companies in Nepal have stopped their operations as they are receiving threats from the Maoists. Dabur India, one of the largest companies  in Nepal, has shut down their research facility as Maoists started creating problems. If the security condition further deteriorates, then Dabur India would shut down its main factory in Kathmandu. I am quoting from the report published in BBC:

One of Nepal's biggest companies has suspended some operations because of unspecified threats by Maoist rebels.

Dabur Nepal said the rebels had made unjustified demands. There has been no comment from the Maoists.

Last May, dozens of companies suspended operations saying they could not cope with financial extortion by the rebels.

The UN has accused Maoists of extortion in the past. The Nepalese government signed a peace deal with rebels last November to end a 10-year insurgency.

Dabur Nepal, a subsidiary of Dabur India, is one of the leading exporters of Nepal. The nursery of Dabur worth 100 million Nepali rupees has been operating for 6-7 years in Banepa, on the east of Kathmandu valley. It employs 60-80 women. On 21st December, the Maoist cadres came into the nursery and misbehaved with the women. Dabur Nepal’s CEO expressed his grief at this matter. He said that anybody would think twice before investing in Nepal. The BBC report says that if the situation becomes critical, then Dabur India would shut down its multi million dollar operation plant on the south of Kathmandu.

This is very sad news for the people of Nepal. The country has just seen political stability. The war between the Maoists and government army and protest against king already caused heavy damage to the country. Now, government is spending huge amount of money to house the Maoist guerillas. At this critical stage, such incidents would further intensify the country’s financial crisis. The government and Maoist leaders should work together to peacefully negotiate with large foreign companies; or else, people would lose their jobs.
