World Cup Cricket 2007: Addressing the Security Concern

Security is a major concern for any international event these days. For sporting events the risk is even bigger as thousands of people go to a country and visit the stadiums. World Cup Cricket 2007 is being organized by several countries in the West Indies. So, the matter of security has even become more complicated. These Caribbean countries are not rich and that is why the risk is even bigger. The good thing is that some rich and powerful countries have come forward to help the hosts of World Cup Cricket 2007.

The Hindu reported:

Cricket may not be creating ripples in United States yet, but it will make its presence felt during the World Cup in Caribbean next month by contributing in specialised training, including port security and bomb detection.

Ann Jackson, World Cup coordinator for the US Embassy in Barbados, said the United States had contributed about $3 million (euro2.28 million) in specialised training, including port security and bomb detection.

Jackson said, the US has also helped set up a database that will check travelers' names against criminal watch lists.

"We anticipate that this project will be one of the legacies of the cricket World Cup," she said.

Let us pray and hope that World Cup Cricket 2007 finishes without any kind of security problem. By the way Australia, South Africa, Britain, China, France, Canada and India are supporting the West Indies in this regard. Thus, the game of Cricket got some exposure among the governments of France and China where Cricket is not popular at all.
