Aishwarya's Provoked has provoked the wife of India's Prime Minister

Aishwarya Rai’s latest movie, Provoked is based on the true story of an Indian wife, Kiranjit Ahluwalia, a victim of violence and sexual abuse, who played crucial role in changing the judicial system in Britain. The movie has been widely appreciated by film critics. Among the list of appreciators, India’s Prime minister, Manmohan Singh’s wife, Gursharan Kaur, has been added.

After watching the movie, Kaur has written a letter to the producer of the film saying that the film has dealt with an issue that needs to be shared among women so that they can take courageous step against physical abuse. Business of cinema reports:

Indian prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh's wife Gursharan Kaur has lauded the soon to be released film Provoked, saying "it brilliantly highlights the trauma and struggle associated with domestic violence which many women undergo."

A special screening of the film, which stars Aishwarya Rai was organized for Kaur in New Delhi recently. Visibly touched by the sensitive film, Kaur has penned the laudatory comments in a letter to the producers of the film.

"The issues raised by the movie need to be widely publicized and shared so that women can courageously speak against this inhuman act," she has noted.

Provoked is the true life depiction of Kiranjit Ahluwalia (played by Aishwarya Rai), the Asian woman who overturned the British judicial system and transformed the meaning of "provocation" in the case of physically abused women, winning justice for women subjected to domestic violence, rape and sexual abuse. The film, based on Ahluwalia's biography Circle of Light by Rahila Gupta, follows her lonely struggle in an abusive 10-year marriage, her retaliation through the murder of her violent husband and the efforts of women activists Southall Black Sisters to bring her justice.

India is a male dominated society and still now many women faces physical abuse in the hands of their husbands and in laws. It is not that Provoked is the first movie of its type. Earlier, many movies have been made on this issue. For example, Mehndi in 1998 is a movie that deals with this issue. Rani Mukherjee, another famous actress of India played the central character “Pooja” in the movie.
