Mukesh Ambani: Richest Man in the World or Richest Man in India?

It is big news indeed. India has now the richest man in the world- Mukesh Ambani. Last year, I wrote that Mukesh Ambani was one of the top ten richest men in India. In fact, he was the third richest man that time. Now, thanks to the big gains in the share market, Mukesh Ambani has benefited enormously and according to some media reports, he is today the richest man in the world.

To know about the gift of Mukesh Ambani read this:

Most Expensive Birthday Gift from Mukesh Ambani: A Private Jet of $59 Million Only

Economic Times wrote:

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani on Monday became the richest person in the world, surpassing American software czar Bill Gates, Mexican business tycoon Carlos Slim Helu and famous investment guru Warren Buffett, courtesy the bull run in the stock market.

Following a strong share price rally on in his three group companie, India's most valued firm Reliance Industries, Reliance Petroleum and Reliance Industrial Infrastructure Ltd, the net worth of Mukesh Ambani rose to $63.2 billion (Rs 2,49,108 crore).

In comparison, the net worth of both Gates and Slim is estimated to be slightly lower at around $62.29 billion each, with Slim leading among the two by a narrow margin.

This is great news for the people of India. I am sure that many people who read the news were happy that India could produce the richest man in the world even for one day.

Wikipedia has acknowledged this fact and wrote:

Mukesh Ambani (April 19, 1957 Aden, Yemen) is the chairman, managing director and the largest shareholder of Reliance Industries, India's largest private sector company and a Fortune 500 Company. [2] His personal stake in Reliance Industries is 48%.[3] His wealth was US$64 billion as of October 2007, making him the world's richest person. However, his wealth was valued at US$ 64 billion in October 2007 taking into account his holding in Reliance Industries and group companies. This made Mukesh the richest Indian and the richest man in the world, ahead of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal.[4] Mukesh and younger brother Anil are sons of the late founder of Reliance Industries, Dhirubhai Ambani. As a result of a strong share price rally on 29 October 2007 (in his three group companies - Reliance Industries, Reliance Petroleum and Reliance Industrial Infrastructure Ltd.) Mukesh Ambani became the richest man in the world with a net worth of $63.2 billion.

What is interesting to me is that I found this news item mainly in Indian media sites. So far, I did not find confirmation of this fact in any western media website.

Merabsp.com wrote:

After the rally today, experts have reported that Mukesh Ambani's networth has touched 2,49,108 crore (US$63.2 billion) based on the martket value of his stock holding in Reliance Industries, Reliance Petroleum and Reliance Industrial Infrastructure Ltd.

If market the estimates are correct then Bill Gates and Carlose Slim Helu whose net worth are pegged at US$ 62.29 billion and US$ 62.2993 billion respectively were displaced by the Indian business industrialist Mukesh Ambani as the world's richest man.

Well, there is some doubt whether Mukesh Ambani has really become the richest man in the world or not. I visited the website of Reliance Industries Limited but did not find anything there. Instead, I found another report in Timesnow that stated that Mukesh Ambani might not be the richest man in the world today.

Timesnow wrote:

Just minutes after wire agencies came out with reports that Billionaire Mukesh Ambani had surpassed American software czar Bill Gates as the world's richest man on Monday (October 29) came the quick clarification from RIL saying that the calculations estimating Ambani's wealth are inaccurate.

So, I am a bit confused. I hope that by tomorrow, this matter will become clear. Anyway, I think that even if Mukesh Ambani has not become the richest man in the world at least, he has become the richest man in India.

What do you think about Mukesh Ambani?

You have mentioned some important points in you articles which are believable. But I am confused because some days ago I heard that Bill Gets was selected the richest person in the world but I could not remember the exact time and date. As you have used the most recent news, so I have to comments on it.
In your article, you explained, “I am a bit confused. I hope that by tomorrow, this matter will become clear. Anyway, I think that even if Mukesh Ambani has not become the richest man in the world at least, he has become the richest man in India.” It is very good news that India is the owner of the richest man in the world.
The most important point in your article is that no western media do not publish any news on that important news. So we are waiting for the final news.

It was quite an informative news especially with booming stock market. To make a statement in the world that India has got some of the richest people on the world would be a dissapointment if we still have poverty.'one individual cannot himself change the whole scenario surrounding this issue' - this is what we usually think and say. But people like Ambani have shown to the world that they can from scratch become the richest men in world in a timespan of three decades. So if an individual wishes he can bring about changes to the problems of poverty.

Indian people must be proud of Mukesh Ambani for his becoming the richest person in the world. This business tycoon has recently become the world’s richest person. It is obviously a good news for whole India and Asia. It is really very surprising that western media still remains quiet regarding this news. So, it needs a worldwide confirmation that Mukesh Ambani is now the richest person in the world.

Mukesh Ambani is the son of Dhirubhai Ambani, the founder of Reliance Group, India’s most known business institution. It seems that Mukesh Ambani could follow the feat of his late father.

Anyway, I hope the western media will also focus the news very soon and confirm the news that Mukesh Ambani is now the richest person in the world.

It is a disgrace to the country when these tycoons are more concerned about boosting thei egos while millions of Indian kids don't get proper health care or education. What is Ambani doing to help them. Almost nothing. People like Bill Gates come to India and spend their millions on helping the Indian kids, while the billionaires in India are looking at how to take up valuable real estate space in Mumbai to build glass houses to boost their own ego. I am not saying that they should distribute their wealth. But they should pay some attention to the general welfare of the country.

FOR THE HUMBLE ATTENTION OF :

SIR,

please help !
I am an Indian married female with 2 university going children, the one in a medical profession 3rd year and the other in an accounting profession.

I have been up and until the 13th of December 2007 running a very
Successful retail Tyre business , in an area named Flag Staff in the Eastern Cape , South Africa .On the strength of this business I was given a bank loan for R800 000.00 to purchase a property , which I did .

In August 2007 I entered into a written sale agreement with a WHITE MALE Mr Stuart Callaway to purchase a residential Property. The seller has cheated me for almost R200 000.00 with the help of the transferring Attorneys, and the negligence of the bond attorneys , resulting in my business to close down . This was a fully cash operating business and I had no creditors what so ever .

I have reported the matter to the South African Law Society, reference no RD 004 359 261 za and the Banks Ombudsman , reference FNBO 200 . I have instituted a HIGH COURT action against the seller .The case number being 1973/08 .

Due to the above circumstances , my financial situation has become embarrassing , I am unable to pay for my children university fees , my
Bond payments has fallen into Arears , and my business has come to a stand still.
Although my property has an excess value of R500 000.00 , I am unable to get a loan due to the new credit act.
I am kindly requesting for a loan in the sum of R250 000.00 , in order that I recommence my tyre business . I will repay the loan as soon as possible, further that I will be able to make repayments on a weekly or monthly basis
As per your request .
Sir you may wonder why I did not approach someone locally , reason being I do not want to be abused for the sake of some monies .

I hope and pray that you, sir will look at my application favorably , I promise to repay the entire loan once I get started, in a short space of time .
I promise never to fail a single obligation.
May God Bless

Thank you
Yours faithfully

It is amazing to see some other people besides Americans are at the top. People like Mukesh Ambani have done well to even reach the 62 billion dollar mark and should be credited for it. However I personally think men like him should be in the fore front ensuring that the welfare of less fortunate Indians is catered for, instead of leaving such mammoth tasks to outsiders like the great philanthropisits like Bill Gates.
